European Data Protection: Coming of Age

Wednesday 25th to Friday 27th January 2012 – Brussels, Belgium

Join us for this three-day top-level scientific programme

  • organized by academics all over Europe
  • various panels with presentations held by international computers, privacy, law and data protection experts
  • updates on the latest emerging issues
  • interactive workshops and valuable networking opportunities with leaders in the field

As in the previous editions, more than 20 panels, will be organized focusing on key issues such as geolocalization, e-identity and e-management, enforcement

of copyright protection, surveillance in the workplace, accountability and communication of privacy. In addition, there will be workshops on topics such as eDiscovery,

data mining of open source data, privacy impact assessments and “privacy by design” as well as special events for PhD and Early Stage Researchers.

2012 has been declared the European Year of Active Aging. Some of the panels will focus on two key themes: Aging and New Technologies. While great promises and expectations lay with technological developments for ageing well at home, at work, and in the community, ICT solutions for active ageing also pose risks to individual autonomy and private life. The second key theme, partially intertwined with "aging", concerns the so-called “new technologies”. Their nature and deployment is particularly far-reaching, with a scope of action that ranges from everyday activities to infrastructure and security devices. In this respect, the impressive diffusion

of “smart environments and practices” calls for a critical discussion and a sound conceptualization of their impact on privacy and data protection, and, more in general,

of their role in the development of contemporary societies.

More information on the programme and registration will be sent to you soon.
